You and I are both experiencing tumultuous change in our work lives and beyond. This year has certainly taken a page out of last year’s book. However, there is hope for us in the future if we stand together. JPL workers through JWU-UAW are politically engaged at the City, State, and Federal level to advocate for the innovative and essential work performed by JPL workers in service of the nation. By forming a union together we can advocate for JPL’s financial and political interests to ensure a stable environment on the Lab.
On Friday, January 30, a group of JPL workers met at Caltech campus and online to reaffirm our commitment to forming a union to win important rights and benefits and help JPL regain its purpose in our lives. We have to get a supermajority of JPLers to sign a union authorization card by August 2026; the time to act is now. Help us get to our goal of getting a union authorization card signed by 60% plus of JPLers.
There are many ways you can help, depending on how much time you have. The most important thing you can do is talk with immediate coworkers about signing a card. Listed here, in increasing order of involvement!
1. Submit pic and quote: Many fellow JPLers have submitted a picture and quote to be featured on this page: https://jplworkersunited.org/about/. This is not very time consuming and has a great impact on other JPLers to see people they trust supporting union efforts.
2. Attend a training: You have help! Each week, JPL workers we organize a training on how to have effective conversations with our co-workers about forming a union and what to do with cards once you have them. Devised and run by us, for us. Attend one!
3. Identify 5 co-workers and talk with them about unionizing in the next week: Ours is a grassroots effort. Our community is our winning hand. Help to form your unionus grow it by talking to your co-workers and encourage them to sign a card. It may take more than one conversation, but every little bit helps.
4. Attend a General/Division Organizing Committee Meeting: Every week, we meet on Monday at noon as part of the organizing committee in Bldg 158-200 and online to review our status and make plans for the week. In addition, divisional organizations also meet regularly. This is a great way to meet fellow organizers and learn the ropes of having conversations!
